Lead Designer

Remote - Raleigh, NC

About Squanch Games:

Since opening our doors in 2016, we've recruited a troop of the most hilariously unique talent the biz has to offer. We're constantly looking to expand our team of incredible people: They're crackin' some jokes, making awesomely strange stuff, and thinking outside the box simultaneously -- that's the "Squanch Factor" if you will.

At Squanch Games, we make dreams come true – the funkiest, bizarrest dreams from the depths of our souls. Real complex stuff, but you probably know what we’re talking about because you’ve already played our games, right? RIGHT? (Hint: YES).

If you see molds and like breaking them, or boxes and enjoy stepping outside of them–ONWARD! Also, if you love working remotely, we're the studio for you.

Think you've got what it takes? Go for it. Seriously! Send us your resume!

Lead Designer

What you'll do:

As a Lead Designer at Squanch Games, you will be in charge of making the translation of design concepts into high quality game execution. You love thinking about how to bring great character-driven narrative and gameplay to life. Building an experience to be proud of is extremely important to you and you have great ideas on how to make an impactful and funny game. You will be the Lead Designer on our newest unannounced project, how exciting!

In this role, you will:

  • Problem solve: You have an indie spirit that inspires you to be creative and willing to go above and beyond to find solutions.
  • Be curious & passionate: You enjoy comedy and science fiction in all mediums and you actively work on, or play, action-adventure games.
  • Collaborate & be humble: You know that the best work comes from a team who trusts and respects each other. You strive to collaborate with others and don’t care whose ideas win. Best ideas win!
  • Mentor: You're skilled at getting the best from your team and mentoring those who need it.
  • Get your hands dirty: Squanch is full of folks who are flexible and willing to dive in and make changes when necessary. No paper-only designers, please.

What we’re looking for:

  • Someone who can understand all aspects of a game’s design and can identify how best to deliver on that vision to a high quality bar.
  • Someone who has experience on first person shooters with a narrative lean.
  • Unreal Engine 4/5 experience.
  • Credit on one or more published titles as a lead designer.
    • Shipped console titles are a plus!
  • Someone who can lead and mentor but is not afraid to get their hand dirty (keep the other one clean, please).
  • Experience taking directors' visions and changes and helping the team execute on them.
  • A great design communicator who can use efficient methods (draw visuals, in engine examples, find references, etc) to convey a design to the team.
  • Someone who understands high quality but also knows how to problem solve to get there with limited resources.

Benefits:

  • Salary range: $119,000 to $162,000 depending on experience
  • Health, dental & vision insurance
  • Short term & long term disability insurance coverage
  • Paid parental leave
  • 401k and FSA
  • Unlimited PTO & flexible schedule
  • Completely remote studio
  • Bonus to ensure a comfortable work from home setup
  • Monthly snack box
  • Monthly stipend for WFH expenses
