Position Title: Sr Software Engineer I

External Description:

What does the Frostbite team do? We develop the Frostbite engine, EA's state of the art multi-platform game development engine. Frostbite has powered games such as FIFA, Madden NFL, Battlefield, Need For Speed, Dragon Age: Inquisition, PGA Tour and Star Wars Battlefront. Frostbite uses its proprietary technical advantages to empower game creators to shape games and push the boundaries of what they can achieve. We are located across North America (Vancouver, Edmonton, Orlando, Montreal), Europe (Guildford, Stockholm, Bucharest) and Australia (Melbourne).

The challenge ahead:

As a Senior Build Engineer Reporting to a Software Engineer manager, you will oversee Frostbite's automation pipeline. You will analyze our CI process and infrastructure for our main development streams, and re-architect for scalability and performance, with an emphasis on cloud viability. We want you to create the fastest build pipeline possible, using data analytics to monitor the health, performance and cost.

This is a cross-discipline role, where you get the chance to work with many departments and partner teams, and have a big impact on the game engine development process. We are looking for a DevOps process and tooling competency, along with a strength in creating performant solutions for our CI automation in cloud technologies. The CI environment necessitates a understanding of cloud technologies.

We are looking for a Senior Build Engineer to join Frostbite development and provide services, DevOps development experience (cloud and on-prem), and expertise to our development teams at EA Vancouver.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead role in defining the technology solutions to implement a hybrid (cloud and on premise) buildfarm operations, delivering the latest build and test automation solutions for Frostbite's large scale software systems
  • Setup and deployment of Cloud solutions for DevOps
  • Setup and deployment of Orchestration solutions for BuildFarm needs
  • Design and implement Measurement collection and analysis to bring end to end improvements
  • Profiling of CI workflows to improve performance and reliability
  • Mentor for staff in developing solutions, and troubleshooting for CI workflows
  • Work with partners to understand important requirements to translate into solutions
  • Troubleshoot skill in CI space. Emphasis on practical solutions.
  • Switch between, static/dynamic, and cloud/on-prem environments and multiple operating environments and script/code languages.
  • Collect data to backup "proof" on tech directions to pursue
  • Ease of working with different groups both technical and non-technical across different time zones.
  • Passionate about improving the workflow experience for the end user
  • Competent ease at recognizing and solving build failures in all the stages of a CI environment.
  • Provide expertise on evaluating solutions for quality, efficiency, and correctness of approach
  • Communicate to senior management, partners, and expert influential collaboration with team members

Qualifications:

  • BSc in Computing Science or equivalent
  • Certifications one or more cloud environments (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ years’ experience as a lead of a large team and large-scale operation
  • 3 years of experience working with cloud platforms
  • Have experience with DevOps concepts and operations (containerization, orchestration, virtualization)
  • Well versed in the use and administration of CI frameworks.
  • Well versed in one or more source control systems (preference on Perforce,Git)
  • Programming experience in an of Java, Groovy, Python, C#.
  • Cloud DevOps knowledge, and experience (Terraform, Kubernetes, autoscaling, cloud compute, cloud storage)
  • Expert competence navigating multiple operating environments (Windows, Linux).

Bonus:

  • Experience with data search, analytics, and monitoring tools across 10 platforms and 1000s of VMs & 100s of physical equipment. (eg. splunk, elasticsearch, and their visual options, e.g. kibana).
  • Experience running CI for large monolithic code bases
  • Work on complex/large-scale build systems, for a game engine or large-scale application
  • Experience leading organizations through paradigm shifts
