Position Title: Senior Manager, Benefits

Candidate Profile:

Reporting to the Senior Director of Global Benefits and Wellbeing, you will manage the ongoing oversight of our Canadian Health and Benefits Programs, Retirement and Financial Programs, Disability and Worker's Compensation Programs, Time off and Leave of Absence Programs, Outsourced Administration, Wellbeing Programs, Perks, and any Mergers & Acquisitions.

You have deep technical strength in all the above-mentioned programs, as well as best practices and governing Canadian laws. You are adept in working with multiple internal partners, external consultants, and vendors.

With two direct reports who manage benefits and retirement administration and provide project support, your success will rely on the ability to inspire and support others through mentorship, teamwork, respect, and credibility.

You will also evaluate existing benefit program offerings relative to the marketplace and our goals, recommending process and program enhancements, and leading and implementing design change.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support and champion our global benefits strategy and philosophy. Design, recommend and implement benefit programs while managing costs, considering employee feedback, and maintaining market competitiveness.
  • Be an expert on Canadian benefits programs, ensuring our plans and programs continue to comply with all federal and provincial laws.
  • Contribute to the benefits strategy, and ensure our programs are progressive, cost-effective, equitable, and flexible.
  • Manage the annual benefits renewals and ensure design strategies, rates, communications are well-aligned. This includes coordination with external consultants and internal partner engagement. Use change management principles to lead change.
  • Oversee the Canadian retirement and financial wellbeing programs and policies, and education strategy.
  • Manage the Retirement Committee and act as Secretary. Develop the agenda, prepare materials with our external consultant, and facilitate meetings.
  • Provide consultative technical expertise and guidance regarding benefits matters to executives, managers, and People Practices. Research complex benefits issues and propose resolutions, ensure internal clients' needs are met.
  • Identify areas where new/improved benefit plans/processes can improve quality of existing benefit services and recommend future opportunities.
  • Oversee employee communications for project-based benefits, including messaging, benefits web design, employee sessions, timeline, resources, and budget. Keep all partners aligned and informed of projects in advance.
  • Provide team support, including the following:
  • Management of vendors and carriers, monitor vendor performance, and support team members in vendor and internal client interactions;
  • Ensure vendors and carriers are providing excellent levels of service, competitive pricing, and results. Market services, if necessary;
  • Review all communications to employees;
  • Complete annual budgets, and review contracts, policies, documents, and surveys. Ensure all documents are up-to-date, accurate and filed.
  • Manage work and projects tactically to align time, resources, and dependencies. As an adept project manager, you will use necessary resources to meet priorities and achieve results.
  • Lead and ensure new program implementations and M&A projects are performed flawlessly.
  • Help shape a Wellbeing strategy.

 

Qualifications

Knowledge:

  • Seen as a true expert on all benefits related topics. Requires a comprehensive knowledge of Canadian policies, trends, laws, regulations, system tools, health care industry, current events and best practices. Lead strategy discussions and design decisions, exercising expertise in benchmarking of best practices.
  • Business, benefits accounting/finance, and HR knowledge.

 

Skills and Abilities:

  • Customer service focus with strength in listening and communicating
  • Excellent process design, project management, change management, and consulting skills
  • Excellent coaching, and management skills
  • You're comfortable managing multiple programs and change initiatives
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel (can maintain complex spreadsheets), PowerPoint, and HRIS

 

Education and Experience:

  • At a minimum, a Bachelor's level degree in a related field
  • 10+ years of Canadian benefits experience, managing at least one team member in a large global organization, including 5+ years of management experience.
